Explore A New Route to South Lake Tahoe
During the partial and full closures expected over the next two construction seasons, why not take advantage of the beautiful alternate route to get to Lake Tahoe? The alternate route to South Lake Tahoe unfolds a surprising new adventure of history, scenery and discovery.
Tour the Historic Gold Country of El Dorado
The drive, which adds 35 miles or less to the trip, is a wonderful opportunity to tour the historic Gold Country of El Dorado and Amador Counties. Along the way, explore historic Victorian inns, unique dining and shopping, and rustic Gold Rush era museums and mine tours. Plan your Way 2 Tahoe and check out the following visitor information and guides:
Historic Luther Pass
Luther Pass (where U.S. Highway 88 connects with U.S. Highway 89) is named after Ira M. Luther, one of the "Irish Brigade" described by Mark Twain in “Roughing It.” In 1854, Luther traversed the pass by covered wagon; he was also involved in later efforts to use the pass as the route for the Central Pacific Railroad.
The initial route for the Pony Express across the Sierra Nevada in 1860 connected Placerville and Lake Valley across Luther Pass to Woodfords and on to Nevada, but the route was quickly changed to use the Kingsbury Grade instead.
Nowadays, during the ski season, the pass serves as an important connection between South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Highway 50, to the north of the pass, and the Kirkwood ski area to the south. In the summer, it connects those areas via Monitor Pass to U.S. Route 395 and the eastern Sierra.
